Description

The BBC micro:bit V2 is a small pocket-sized computer that you program, customise and control yourself, to bring your digital ideas, games and apps to life.

It is aimed at those taking their first steps in computer programming. You write code with blocks in a simple online editor, and the board connects easily to components using crocodile clips. This way you can build your own projects and work with electronics without difficulty.

Features

  • Inputs and outputs: Every computer system is based on inputs and outputs. Despite its small size, the BBC micro:bit has quite a few of them, so you can get to know them in practice and use them with electrical components.
  • LEDs: An LED (light-emitting diode) is an output device that produces light. The BBC micro:bit V2 has a display of 25 LEDs, which you can program however you like.
  • Buttons: Buttons are among the most common input devices. The board has two programmable buttons and a reset button.
  • Radio: With the radio you send and receive messages. BBC micro:bits communicate with each other via radio waves.
  • Accelerometer: An accelerometer is a sensor that measures movement. On the micro:bit it detects when the board is tilted left-right, backwards-forwards and up-down, which is very useful when making games.
  • Compass: A digital compass is an input sensor that detects magnetic fields. The BBC micro:bit's built-in compass can tell which direction the board is facing.
  • Light sensor: A light sensor is an input device that measures light levels. The BBC micro:bit detects light using its own LEDs, so you can program it to work as a light sensor.
  • Temperature sensor: A temperature sensor is an input device that measures temperature. On the BBC micro:bit it is located inside the processor and gives an approximate value for the temperature of the air around the board.
  • Pins: Along the bottom edge of the BBC micro:bit there are 25 gold strips, the pins. Through these you build circuits, connect external components such as buzzers and motors, and carry out your own projects.
  • Sound: The BBC micro:bit can be programmed to produce many kinds of sounds: individual notes, tones, rhythms and even your own musical compositions.
  • USB port: USB (Universal Serial Bus) is used for connecting, communicating with and powering computers and digital devices. The BBC micro:bit has a USB port, so you can connect it to your computer with a micro USB cable and power it from there.
  • Processor: The processor is often called the "brain" of the computer. The BBC micro:bit has a built-in microprocessor, which runs the programs you write.
